World Population Day: It’s Significance

Observed on 11 July annually, World Population Day was established by the governing council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989 to focus on the urgency and importance of population issues.

The second most populous country in the world, India with 1.37 billion people is raising alarm globally. India is anticipated to beat China as the World’s most populous country around 2027. This statement was released in World Population Prospects 2019, by the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

It’s Significance:

  • The major objective behind observing this day annually is to focus the attention on the consequences of increasing population and how it is hampering the overall development plans and programmes.
  • The population explosion is dangerous and alarming as it hinders sustainable development.
  • Apart from so many threats, the World Population Day must be seen as an opportunity to celebrate the spirit of brotherhood.
  • This day must be regarded as a day for an individual to realise the responsibility you have for your society and people.
  • Every country celebrates World Population Day in a different way. A majority of the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) offices celebrate by making posters and organising essay and sports concerts to create awareness regarding the cause.

How the government is working towards population control?

Several measures have been introduced by our government like assured home delivery of contraceptives by Accredited Social Health Activist. They have been instructed to distribute kits containing family planning. To uplift billions of people both in the present and in the future, the government and its citizens must change the way they use the limited resources and implement schemes/initiatives to contain population explosion.

Relying on our government is a good thing, after all, we choose our representatives to look after and solve our matters. But being a part of a community where you have been allotted with limited resources it’s your duty to aware others.
